McWhorter Reunion 2012 Posted by mcwhorterwebmaster (2011/5/23)
Save the date Sunday, June 12, 2011and spread the word. We are planning to host the McWhorter Reunion this year in Lexington Ga. We will meet at the Cemetery in Maxeys in the morning and then have lunch at the beautiful Brooks Plantation on Church St in Lexington.

Lexington, Ga and Oglethorpe County has been home to many a McWhorter following John's arrival here in the late 1700's.

The second weekend of June on Sunday, we meet at the McWhorter Cemetery in Maxeys in the morning around 11:00 a.m. for a brief memorial gathering and prayer, then off to lunch. Carol and Jim Woodall and their sister Lucia Smalls have hosted last several years and we are so thankful for their hospitality, however this year for something a little different and in honor of the McWhorter History in Lexington, GA we are hosting the lunch in Lexington. You will all really enjoy the location and if you would like to make a weekend of it, there are some rooms available at the Hummingbird B&B next door, The Chicken Coop B&B in Crawford as well as invites to put up family from friends in the area.

The stretch of Highway that runs through Lexington is named for Hamilton McWhorter, Jr, who is well at 98 in Atlanta, the 1887 Courthouse and Old Jailhouse carry the legacy of being constructed under the watchful eye of the then Chairman of the County Commissioners another Hamilton McWhorter, Shaking Rock Park just around the corner was donated to the community by yet other McWhorter descendants, Other McWhorter's James Hamilton, son of Hugh and Helena Ligon, his eldest son Joseph Hugh and their grandchild Matt McWhorter were all raised here and contributed in a large way both to local and state growth in the past two centuries. James Hamilton also lost two of his son's to the Civil War, they are buried here and several letters those wrote during the war are housed at UGA's Hargrett Library just up the road.
